National Cancer Institute (NCI) Meeting and Analytical Support Tasks

Overview

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) established the Center for Global Health (CGH) to create sustainable research, evaluation support, and international partnerships that support programs addressing global gaps in cancer research. Synergy is supporting the CGH mission through the Logistics, Data Analysis and Technical Support Contract. Our analysts studied NCI-funded quality of care research to determine how funding supported research and scientific advancement in cancer care delivery and how to translate and disseminate best practices globally to low-resource countries. Currently, our staff members are working with CGH on a research portfolio project to provide insights into factors associated with grant funding success for applicants from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The analyses will identify and examine cancer health disparity grants funded by NCI during the past 10 years and any related literature.

Our team is providing support for two flagship virtual events hosted by CGH: the Global Cancer Research and Control Seminar Series and the 11th Annual Symposium on Global Cancer Research (ASGCR). In support of the events, our team will provide technical logistics and speaker/VIP management, develop a communications plan including social media entries, and facilitate the abstract submission process and subsequent virtual poster session; in addition, our Science Writer will develop a report of presentations and discussion at the ASGCR.

Impact

Cancer is a global public health priority. By 2040, 69 percent of cancer deaths will occur in LMICs, compared with 6 percent in the United States (NCI, 2022). CGH-sponsored activities, such as data analysis, partnerships, and events, have allowed the exchange of information and improved global cancer planning and research capacity.

The portfolio analyses advance CGH’s mission by providing objective data about NCI-funded research and ensure that the science supported in grants meets the evolving priorities of the National Institutes of Health. The analyses also examine trends in funding and published results for research gaps and opportunities to address emerging global issues.

CGH events represent NCI in international research partnerships, playing a key role in coordinating multinational research efforts for global benefit, and creating opportunities for collaboration and exchange of knowledge addressing the underrepresentation of cancer research and control in LMICs.
