Technical Assistance for the Office of Indian Education’s (OIE) Discretionary Grantees

Overview

Synergy provided comprehensive technical assistance (TA) support for six discretionary grantees of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Indian Education (OIE). Rooted in comprehensive needs assessments, Synergy’s data analysis informed the specific type of TA provided to grantees that develop, test, and demonstrate the effectiveness of educational services and programs for Indian students in preschool, elementary, and secondary schools.

Currently, our team is designing an Indigenous language resource center to curate and disseminate best practices, research, educator certification information, program locator, TA, podcasts, and blogs aimed at supporting the revitalization of Indigenous languages. As part of our work, we are also expanding OIE’s presence on social media. Monthly editorial calendars are created to highlight Indigenous leaders, grantees, and organizations, as well as to inform stakeholders of relevant events and resources.

Impact

Synergy’s TA support included more than 90 TA events annually, such as grant program-specific Talking Circles, OIE Office Hours and an email helpline, customized one-on-one grantee coaching, and a quarterly OIE newsletter. Annually, TA support has reached more than 180 grantees that serve more than 100,000 Indigenous students nationwide. Synergy partnered with OIE to reimagine the annual Project Directors Meeting—transforming it from a 1-day meeting with each grantee group to a 3-day virtual meeting with seven discretionary grant groups.
