Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Technical Assistance (TA) Center

Overview

Synergy has been entrusted with managing the REMS TA Center since 2012 in support of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Supportive Schools. The REMS TA Center supports the efforts of K-12 and higher education agencies to increase their capacity to prepare for emergency incidents—natural, biological, and technological hazards and adversarial and human-caused threats—through the development of high-quality emergency operations plans. Synergy’s multidisciplinary team has redesigned more than five iterations of the REMS TA Center website to ensure that education agencies and their partners have access to comprehensive resources, tools, and trainings aimed at building their emergency preparedness capacity in alignment with emerging trends (both subject matter and technological capabilities).

Synergy collaborates with subject matter experts and key stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels to develop and disseminate resources, tools, self-paced e-learning courses, mobile and web-based applications, presentations, and trainings. Synergy also provides opportunities for peer learning and collaboration on key school and campus safety topics in response to existing and emerging issues through use of the REMS TA Center Community of Practice and social media as well as leadership and focus groups.

Impact

The REMS TA Center supports prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery following various emergency incidents that have affected individual schools, whole school communities, and our nation over the past decade. These efforts have resulted in recognition of REMS TA Center resources, trainings, and tools by federal partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and by various national news outlets such as Education WeekUSA Today, the Washington Post, and more.
